Planning Your Iceland Vacation

If you haven’t yet been to Iceland yourself, you’ve probably at least met someone who’s visited. There are many reasons for Iceland’s tourism explosion, but there’s one obvious reason that towers above all others: it’s an incredible place!

Iceland is home to beautiful natural scenery, ranging from the stunning to the strange (plenty of sights are both). And Iceland has more than just what you’ll find outside. It’s also a place full of wonderful people, great restaurants, and fantastic cultural and architectural attractions.

If you’re planning a vacation to Iceland, then here’s our best advice for pulling off the perfect trip.

Know when to visit

Iceland is great at every time of year, but there are certainly times when must-see sights are most accessible, the weather is most comfortable, and the cities and towns are most lively. Depending on what time of year you visit, you may be able to see the “midnight sun” or Northern Lights.

The peak of Iceland’s tourism season is summer. While visiting during June, July, or August might lead you to encounter some bigger crowds and, in some cases, steeper prices, it’s well worth it to be able to enjoy Iceland in good weather and bright light.

Because it is so far north, Iceland can be quite cold in the winter, when days are short and nights are long. With that said, you may find compelling reasons to visit Iceland at other times of year, and that’s great, too!

Spend time in Reykjavik

Iceland’s biggest city, Reykjavik, is not exactly a teeming metropolis: only around 330,000 people live there, which makes it a little bigger than Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. But it’s a wonderful and comfortable city, full of history and plenty of things to do.

Iceland may be known for its natural wonders, but you should certainly spend some time in Reykjavik and perhaps make it your base of operations for trips to nearby natural sights. The famous “Golden Circle” tour leaves from Reykjavik, for instance.

Head out to Iceland’s national parks

There are a lot of must-see natural sights in Iceland, but you could certainly do worse than to focus on Iceland’s stunning national parks. These spaces are considered exceptional even by the standards of this beautiful land, and that’s why they have been protected.

Some of Iceland’s national parks are within striking distance of Reykjavik, but others are in farther-flung locations. You may want to rent a car to get out to these spaces — happily, it’s not too stressful to drive around Iceland.

Take guided tours

Iceland’s natural spaces can be explored alone, but it’s well worth the investment to pay a professional guide, especially when the tour in question takes care of transportation to a natural site (like the Golden Circle tour) or provides safe access to otherwise inaccessible spaces (like ice cave tours).

Taking an ice cave tour Iceland is a thrilling way to experience the wild natural beauty of this unique place. Ice cave tours are safe ways to explore the winding tunnels of Iceland’s natural ice caves, and they’re a great example of why it pays to hire professionals when you visit Iceland.

It’s hard to go wrong when you’re taking a vacation to a place as beautiful and as welcoming as Iceland. But when you’re talking about a once-in-a-lifetime trip, you want to get every detail right the first time. So plan carefully, take our advice into account, and get ready to experience one of the most beautiful and unique nations on planet Earth.
